Name and current year

Joe, 1st year

Where are you studying?

I am studying at Dudley College

Why did you choose an apprenticeship, instead of a day release course or learning on the job?

I didn’t want to go to university, that route of studying wasn’t my ideal plan.

How are you finding the mix of learning on the job and being at college?

I find it very good. Although my course splits my time between college and working on site. I work in two-week blocks, and this can be very tedious.

What skills have you developed?

I have developed my topographical survey skills and my setting out work is also emerging quite well.

What is your favourite piece of equipment?

The TS15 is my favourite. It was the first piece of kit I used. It was the beginning of my journey into surveying.

Favourite aspect of the job?

I really enjoy doing topographical surveys (or topos for short).

How have you and your mentor got on? Are you learning a lot from them?

My mentor is Chris, and he is great. Chris has shown me the ropes of surveying and has helped to develop my skills.

Why did you choose to become a surveyor?

No day is the same, which keeps it interesting.

What would your advice be to your younger self or to someone looking at becoming a surveyor?

I would say to anyone, to just go for it. There’s no point in waiting, as Nike would say ‘Just do it’.

Are you or someone you know interested in a geospatial apprenticeship? We’re looking for a new apprentice to work with us. You can send an email to surveyors@powersuk.com or contact us for more information.
