Name and current year
Liam, 1st year
Where are you studying?
Cronton College, Widnes
Why did you choose an apprenticeship, instead of a day release course or learning on the job?
I feel it is more suited to my style of learning. I don’t like being stuck in a classroom all day.
How are you finding the mix of learning on the job and being at college?
I like the mix of learning while on the job, and also getting a textbook education, I’m comfortable with it.
What skills have you developed?
I have learnt to use equipment such as a total station, GT scanner and the one-man kit. I have also learnt some physical skills, such as setting out.
What is your favourite piece of equipment?
I really like the GPS.
Favourite aspect of the job?
I enjoy the variety of everything I do because I’m not doing the same things every day.
How have you and your mentor got on? Are you learning a lot from them?
Me and Joe have a healthy working relationship. We get on really well. Joe has helped me to understand the process of the work and the theory behind it, which helps with my college work.
Why did you choose to become a surveyor?
It has a variety of tasks and there are always different sites to visit.
What would your advice be to your younger self or to someone looking at becoming a surveyor?
Surveyors are essential to any construction project, and they are very important. It isn’t repetitive and it’s more engaging than other jobs, so for me, it is a good area to pursue.
