What do you look for when recruiting a new surveyor?

We are firmly committed to encouraging more surveyors into the profession, so we have an active level three and level six apprenticeship programme running at all times. However, if we’re looking to recruit someone with experience, then we’re looking for a team player who has sound geospatial technical ability and a desire to continue learning. Our surveyors of today will become the team leaders and managers of tomorrow, so we also need people who are able to adapt and change in a growing company. However, technical capability, a knowledge of the theory of surveying and of survey equipment and the resources required to carry out a great quality survey are at the heart of our requirements.

What is the most important attribute your look for in a candidate?

It sounds cliched, but a can-do attitude and being a team player really are the most important attributes at Powers.

Is experience or attitude more important?

In most cases attitude is more important than experience. We can teach our surveyors best practise surveying in the office and with external courses. Surveying is a very technical subject though, so whoever we take on has to have a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) mindset.

What qualifications do you expect?

We’d always prefer a relevant degree or HND as it demonstrates that the surveyor has the determination to study and achieve academically. As Powers is a learning organisation, we are looking for surveyors who want to continue their learning and development by becoming members of RICS or CICES – or to develop their skills in a surveying specialism that might require further study. We’re also looking for people with leadership qualities who will become the future leaders in the business.
